James "Saw" Wan signs 8 films deal

James Wan, creator of the Saw serie, has just signed with Icon films to develop 8 films, with the option to director 4 out of 8, and produce the rest.

What started off as a truly original and twisted indie film launched a lucrative franchise that somehow unfairly marked his creator as the man responsible for the wave of torture porn that followed. While it is true that some of the entries of the serie were really poor (especially Saw 3 and 4) it kind of picked up again after that, and it is easy to forget how deliciously twisted and ambitious some of the scripts are.

And he has shown with the underrated Dead silence that he has lost none of his inventiveness when not restraint by the Saw serie. This very creepy and original scary film is definitely worth discovering after his huge flop at the box office a few years ago, especially for his fantastically over the top twist ending.

No words as to whether this will be the launch of a new franchise (in which case 8 films might be a little optimistic) or standalone ones. In the meantime, his latest effort, Insidious with a great cast that includes Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey and Patrick Wilson, and which looks like a cross between Poltergeist and Paranormal activity, is out in Spring.
